Val Cavanagh grew up surrounded by audio.
But, irrespective of their prolonged journey learning new devices and playing in bands of all genres, they always felt a perception of loneliness.
“I’ve been taking part in tunes considering the fact that I was 14 in the Central New York spot, and I personally felt like a little bit of an outcast,” they stated. “Like, there’s not several other people like me as a Black and queer artist myself.”
With the arrival of social media, youthful Black and LGBTQ+ artists have greater obtain to far more musicians of all backgrounds, but resourceful fields keep on being dominated by white, cis-gentlemen, they reported. So they made a decision to develop their own songs festival—Forevermore Fest, a blend in between a avenue honest and block get together that would rejoice marginalized artists.
That competition can take position following Saturday, July 30, in East Syracuse.
“The concept started off as me and my mates being like hey, it’d be super pleasurable to just have a day where by we get to cling out and perform audio all working day,” Cavanagh reported. “Then we talked over the concept a lot more and more and it kind of just snowballed into providing a system to Black and queer artists all through the north east.”
The 26-yr-aged musician’s journey began in grade university, when they joined the marching band and picked up the clarinet. All-around that time, Cavanagh’s stepfather, a luthier—a craftsperson who builds and fixes stringed instruments—entered their daily life, so devices rested just about everywhere, completely ready to be plucked, strummed and mastered.
“I was normally about musical devices,” said Cavanagh, who employs they/them/she/her pronouns. “I was in orchestra and any other new music endeavors all through high school that I could be in.”
Their flavor in music ranged from hardcore, to pop rock to pop new music, and they jumped from band to band, style to genre, drawing inspiration from artists these as Julian Baker, A Excellent Massive Pile of Leaves and Tyler the Creator. Right now, they emphasis generally on audio engineering and audio generation in various studios in Downtown Syracuse.

With Forevermore Fest, Cavanagh hopes to not only spotlight Black and LGBTQ+ artists, but also inspire aspiring creatives who are wanting for another person like them undertaking what they love, just as Cavanagh after ideal.
“We exist,” Cavanagh explained. “And I just want individuals to be in a position to experience safe and to not only arrive out and love a demonstrate, but also to pursue a profession in the arts, to exhibit them that it’s doable.”
