‘There was new music in her’: Vancouver tunes community mourns Juno Award-successful composer Jocelyn Morlock

Users of Canada’s audio group are mourning the loss of life of beloved musician Jocelyn Morlock, a Juno Award-successful composer who spent years as the composer-in-residence at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

The 53-year-old’s death was acknowledged by the symphony, the UBC Faculty of New music, in which she taught, and the Canadian Songs Centre on Tuesday. 

Morlock was recognised for her complex compositions that were inspired by birds and mother nature. 1 of her most noteworthy performs was a piece centered on the Port Coquitlam, B.C., teenager Amanda Todd, who took her very own daily life in 2012.

The composition, titled My Identify is Amanda Todd, received the 2018 Juno Award for Classical Composition of the Calendar year.

Morlock was born in Winnipeg and analyzed new music at Brandon College, in which she met Carrabré, who was the school’s music dean, in 1992.

The music would go on to win the 2018 Juno Award for Classical Composition of the Yr. But Morlock’s major hope for the piece was to uplift others like Amanda.

“I really feel like, in a way, we are empowering Amanda and other little ones like her to discuss up for them selves and to be secure,” Morlock said in 2017.

Carrabré claims he expects good friends, colleagues, and musicians will manage a tribute in Morlock’s honour in the around future.
